Welcome about

I'd love to hear from you, so please click HERE to get in touch. I look forward to hearing more about your wedding day plans and details.

You have just arrived at my blog, and I welcome you!

This blog is just a place where I write about my journey as a wedding photographer, as a mother, wife and friend.

I am an illustrative wedding photographer, located just outside Windsor Ontario.  I have a huge love of photojournalism, black and white photography, and weddings that make me cry! I don't like the ordinary, I love being different, and I put my heart and soul into everything I do.

My kids are my greatest treasure and my hubby my greatest love.

I feel that this quote summarizes me and my outlook on business....

"Always hold on to the truth. Don't let others sway your heart. Don't compromise yourself for the sake of temporal groovyness. Be Deeply Funky. Be separate from the crowd that's awash with normality, by standing on a firm foundation. Never waver in your love or faith ...." - John Fluevog.

a windsor ontario wedding~

last weekend, i had the honour of documenting Steve & Natalie's wedding here in Windsor.
what a great day.

Steve & Natalie were blessed with a rainy day, and i mean BIGTIME rain. i'm told that rain on a wedding day is supposed to be good luck for a marriage, and if that's the case then these two newlyweds are in for a lifetime of luck!

now , photographing a wedding in the rain can be tricky, especially if you are worried about getting wet or dirty, but Steve & Natalie were such great sports! i want to thank them for being willing to work a blue doorway, get a bit creative with an umbrella, and find shelter under a big tree.
all for the sake of having fun and getting some outside wedding photos.

i know that i seem to always gush about love, family, and weddings, but i'm a sucker for all things love.
you see, i am easily moved.
too much so sometimes.
i will admit one thing...... i am always deeply moved by father/daughter & mother/son dances.
there is something so pure, so raw, and so intimate during some of these dances, and it pulls at my heartstrings every time.
this wedding did that to me.
it was beautiful to watch.
i feel honoured to have witnessed it.

Steve & Natalie.
thank you for allowing me to have a small glimpse into your lives. thank you for being willing to suffer the elements for the sake of a few photos. thank you for having such a cute and adorable dog (i really liked him). thank you for hiring me to document your wedding and trusting me to capture your moments and memories.
i wish you every happiness in the world.

i am a wedding photographer.
i document weddings on an almost weekly basis.
i am always telling my clients that marriage is the most wonderful, exciting, and fabulous journey EVER.
i'm not kidding.
i know what i'm talking about.

a few years ago (27 to be exact) , i met and started dating a 14 year old boy. he was pretty cute. he played violin, i played viola, we became best friends, fell in love, and that was that.
at the age of 20 we got married.
we've been busy ever since.

today, i am celebrating my wedding anniversary.
21 years to be exact (i am NOT OLD!!!! i just got married really young)
i am not making things up when i say that marriage is wonderful.
a journey
an adventure
our life

i wanted to write a little post about the most wonderful hubby in the whole world, and thank him publicly for being the most amazing man EVER!!
Darryl is more attentive than i could have ever asked for, he's the most loving father to our 3 beautiful children, and our life has been filled with more joy than i could have ever imagined.
Darryl, these photos are for you. to help you remember our life together these last 21 years, and to get you excited about the next 21 years!!! if we've done all these things in 21 years, can you imagine what our lives will look like when we're 60?

here is a portion of my life in photos, with an emphasis on the most amazing man EVER . please ignore the quality of this photos, since they have been scanned from prints i had, and are not digital files.

Darryl, these are for you!!

here we are at 16 years old. please ignore the bleached hair (we had a run in with Sun-In)

our wedding day, August 19th 1989

SCAN0027.jpg

yep, i was a bride once!!! YAY!
(i got my dress from Valencienne in Toronto and i loved it so much)

SCAN0024.jpg

we didn't have professional wedding photography, and got posed, in midday sun, for our photos. nice squinty-face.

SCAN0028.jpg

our reception was held at the Elmwood Inn & Spa  in Toronto. We danced to 'Dream Come True' by Frozen Ghost

SCAN0026.jpg

the birth of our first son, October 1991. this is my Josh.
i can't believe that we thought we were mature enough to have kids at age 22 !! LOL!

SCAN0025.jpg

the Bowman's teach their kids to play euchre at a very early age.  wow, someone led an ace of spades!!! good lead :)

SCAN0020.jpg

daddy going off to work. Josh loved his daddy, and always painted him pictures or built him bozer-dozers with his big lego blocks (Josh called bulldozers 'bozer-dozers)

SCAN0014.jpg

the day we came home with our Emilie, March 1993. Josh was still a baby at 17 months old, but it was all good.

SCAN0023.jpg

we were all tired in our house, especially since Darryl had just gone back to school full-time and we had two babies at home. not sure what we were thinking , but it was a very tiring time.

SCAN0015.jpg

Josh's first taste at playing a string instrument. he would go on to become an extremely accomplished cellist. always music in the house, since we didn't have a TV (starving students and all that jazz)

SCAN0021.jpg

daddy always makes a great horse. they don't play that game too much anymore, especially since Josh is taller then Darryl these days (and just as hairy) i'm not going to say anything about Josh playing with a Barbie doll ;P

SCAN0022.jpg

our little blond poopsie!!! Cameron loved his daddy too. imagine that!

SCAN0016.jpg

building sand castles at the cottage in Bala. love these guys!

celebrating Emilie's 6th b-day. we have now moved to Windsor Ontario

SCAN0030.jpg

Darryl and our bleach-blond Josh. big hugs.

SCAN0031.jpg

our new passion as a couple ...... SCUBA DIVING!!!!
this was at our open water checkout dive, the weekend we got certified!!
it's a HUGE part of our lives now, and every holiday we take revolves around diving now. best decision EVER!!

SCAN0018.jpg

i'm starting to learn underwater photography here. i love this face.

SCAN0019.jpg

we camp in Tobermory, and there's nothing like getting hit by a freezing cold wave while posing for a photo!! 70 F water is a shock to the senses for sure.

SCAN0017.jpg

more music. Josh, Darryl and I in the Windsor Community Orchestra a few years ago (Josh is taller than Darryl now) there was nothing better than having two of my favourite men in the same orchestra as myself. it's how Darryl and i met all those years ago, and it had all come full circle with the inclusion of our son. we performed a Brahms symphony. it was fabulous.

SCAN0033.jpg

my handsome man just chilling out in Roatan Honduras, where we go for our diving adventures every year.  we talk about the day's diving first thing in the morning, and then dive, dive, dive all day long!!

SCAN0032.jpg

our life is one big, exciting adventure, and i wouldn't have it any other way!! God is good.
happy anniversary my sweet man.
love you.

Happy anniversary! That was a great post, I really enjoyed reading it :) My wife and I were married 20 years ago and didnt use a professional photographer either (my mother-in-laws fault! lol) and our wedding photographs were horrendous! So like you I speak from experience when I urge couples to use a full-time pro. Anyway have a really great anniversary!

this past weekend, i had the great privilege of documenting another fabulous wedding here in Windsor.
i do have to preface this blog post by saying that the weather here in Windsor has been way too hot for weddings this past July, and i think from now on i'm going to suggest to all July brides, that they plan for a hawaiin themed wedding. shorts, t-shirts, and maybe a slip & slide or a sprinkler (for the guests to enjoy).
it's been CRAZY HOT!!!!

ok, i'm back to the wedding post now.

Catherine & Joe's wedding was not just a hot wedding, but it was a lovely wedding.
i met these two lovebirds last Christmas, for the very first time, even though Catherine had hired me to document her wedding during a phone call last summer. these two make Boston their home, and i was so blessed that i was able to be involved in their big day.
when i first spoke to Catherine, she had mentioned that originally they had dreamed of a small and intimate affair, but quickly realized that their dream wedding was going to be something very different.
Catherine is Croatian, and Joe is French. small and intimate weddings are not in either of these group's vocabulary.
i am part french canadian, and i know that not only is family a HUGE deal, but the party WITH the family is super important!!!
i found out that Croatian's are no different.

it's all about the family, the love, the friends, the family (i had to mention that again since it's so important), and the gathering together to surround a newly married couple with blessings and hugs!
oh, and there needs to be a lot of food and desserts.
don't even get me started on the sweet tables!!! oh my !!
i always wish i not only had time to eat dessert when i'm at a wedding, but that i actually had room to eat some of the sweets. i'm always too full after dinner!

a big thank you goes out to Joe & Catherine, for not only being a terribly sweet and loving couple, but for having fun with me on your wedding day! it is always so wonderful to be a witness to the wedding of two people that absolutely adore each other, and you two were no different.
i wish you all the love and happiness in the world, and i am so very blessed to have met you both.
Catherine, your wedding dress is my most favourite dress EVER!! thanks for buying it so that i could photograph it!

now, onto photographs!!

another windsor ontario wedding~

this past weekend,  i had the honour of documenting another awesome wedding!! July is my busiest month this year, so my lucky blog readers get to have eye candy every week this month!! aren't you lucky?

Mary & Rick got married here in Windsor, in a lovely Polish/Catholic ceremony here in town, with the reception held at St.Francis of Assisi Church Hall. i don't think i have ever been served so much food at a wedding before.  it was impressive!!!

Mary contacted me last december, about the possibility of documenting her summer wedding, and i'm so thankful that she did! Mary is the good friend of one of my brides, Laurie, and the two of them talked about all things wedding when they climbed Mt.Everest last November.
yep, you read that correctly.
two of my clients are cool enough (and maybe a little bit insane enough) to have climbed not only Mount Everest, but they also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro a few years ago!! these adventurous pharmacists do these crazy things to raise money for charity, and i think it's fabulous!!
ok, sorry...... too many exclamation points in that last little bit. i'll try harder in the next paragraph.

Mary & Rick are not only adorable together, but they are goofy as well, and have the greatest sense of humour.  even in the insane and unbearable heat of last Saturday, they both just had fun & joked around, laughed at each other, and i wouldn't have been surprised one little bit if they'd put one another in a headlock or something.
it was HOT HOT HOT, and i'm sure they were thankful for the air-conditioned limo.
if there had been a pool at Branteaney's B&B (where we took some photos), i wouldn't have put it past them to just jump in fully clothed. the bridal party was ready to run through the sprinklers (but they decided that an air-conditioned limo filled with cold drinks and brownies was a good alternative)!
i don't normally get quite as much time to just take fun photos of the bride & groom, as i did on this day, so there are quite a few more styled photos than i normally take. it was fun to just try some new ideas and make some quirky portraits.

i am so blessed to work with clients that are not only interesting and adventurous, but that are genuine and real. i just love people who can just be themselves and have fun, show me their love for each other and those around them. it's just such a treat.

when writing about each wedding, i try to think of something out of the ordinary that i got to experience, and there was one thing that happened at this wedding that made me smile.
for the reception, they hired a DJ AND a polish one-man band for the music. i have to say, that i have never heard polish disco before, and now i can say that i have. that guy was great!

Mary & Rick, thank you for just being you. thank you for allowing me to document some of the special moments of your wedding day, and to have a small glimpse into your lives. i know that you will have a marriage filled with love and laughter (goat chin moves & head-butts), and i'm sure that your new home will be fabulous. i wish you all the very best, and thank you for the heartfelt hugs when i left your reception. i love hugs.

I love the bride's dress and bracelet! Gorgeous! Michele, some of my favourite pics you're doing these days are the compositions of all the wedding details (food, place settings, etc.). They compile all in one the vision the couple was trying to achieve, and you make it look so beautiful!

i'm home!!!

i feel so horrible that this blog post is a week late, but i've been away for the last 9 days, shooting 2 destination weddings, and i arrived home late last night.
i did try to get some work done while i was in Mexico, but the internet at the resort was very slow and very sketchy, so my well intentioned blog post did not happen.
so, i'm home and i'm back to work!!

on May15th, i had the honour and the pleasure of photographing Andy & Laurie's beautiful wedding in Amherstburg at Pointe West Golf & Country Club (which is just outside on Windsor Ontario)
i met Andy & Laurie last fall, and we had a super fun engagement session this past February, in the snowy cold.

their wedding day was definitely one for the record books!! it was a day of adventure and laughs, broken gear and a fun trolley ride!
first off, when we arrived at Andy's parents house, we found that we had a wardrobe malfunction with one of the groomsmen. i'll tell you right now, that duct tape isn't really made to hem pants!! of course, duct tape is pretty awesome and you can do so many great things with it, but you can't use it to hem suit pants, and it doesn't stick to neoprene (well, that's another story for another day).
after my gallant offer to hem this poor guy's pants, i quickly realized that i was supposed to be taking the photographs!!! soooooooooooo..... my 2nd shooter took to the task and hemmed away!
it was pretty funny.
thank goodness we didn't have any wardrobe malfunctions at the bride's house.
(always a good thing)

the ceremony and reception went off without a hitch, and i even got a ride in a trolley car into Amherstburg to take some photos.
who doesn't like a trolley ride?

i do have to admit that there was one little hiccup during the day. my main camera body broke, and i am so very thankful that i not only had an assistant that could run back to the trolley to get my back-up camera, but i actually HAD a back-up camera!!!!

public service announcement~ if you are a wedding photographer, you should NEVER photograph a wedding without a back-up camera body!
(you're welcome)

my camera is now in the shop, getting some lovin' and fixin' of the lens contacts.
because i was leaving the next day for 2 destination weddings, i had to go and buy another Nikon D700.  fun stuff!

Andy & Laurie are away on their european honeymoon, but i'd publicly like to thank them for trusting me to document their wonderful day, allowing me to have a small glimpse into their lives, and for being such beautiful people that just adore each other to pieces.
nothing makes me love this job more, than witnessing true love between two special people.
i'm just a big softy for a good love story.

now, here are a few photos of the big day!!

yesterday, my good friend and fellow wedding photographer, Jayme Morrison and I, took to the streets of Windsor to scout some cool new shooting locations for our upcoming wedding season.
ummmm......
it didn't go very well.

you see, we got off to a rocky start when we got sidetracked by talking too much, and then we realized that we were driving aimlessly around! we quickly got back on track, tried to focus, and then decided that we needed to eat.
we have our priorities ya know.

after a yummy lunch and some good conversation at Chanoso's , right in downtown Windsor, we set off on foot to discover some treasures. actually, we thought we might get lucky and come across some REALLY great shooting locations, but we soon realized that it wasn't going to be our lucky day.

well, what do you do when you can't find any awesome locations?
you photograph OTHER COOL STUFF!

some of our finds of the day include an alley with cool shadows, a fair trade store that smelled like incense and had a Matryoshka doll with the face of Vladmir Putin,  a night club called the Boom Boom Room (i like the name),  a Windsor Symphony schedule so that Jayme can take her son to the Peanut Butter n' Jam concerts,  and some mud.

all in all, it wasn't a total loss.
you see, i had a great time getting to know Jayme better, it was beautiful and sunny outside and we got to walk around AND it was a day away from work at the computer, which doesn't happen very often.

here are a few photos from our adventures in Windsor...

i say "why not?"

a few years back, when photography took hold of me and wasn't about to let me go, i probably would never have dreamed that wedding photography would be the place i would end up.
i was one of those people, that thought wedding photographers were right up there with wedding singers (in the placement of all things wedding of course), and the thought of jumping into professional photography was not on the forefront of my mind.
now, if National Geographic would have come knocking on my door and asked me to travel the world and shoot nothing but underwater photography, then i would have been THERE!!!!

unfortunately, Windsor Ontario isn't known for it's lush , underwater reefs or beautiful, pristine wrecks, so underwater photography isn't really something that us Windsor-ites get into very often.
i do have to say, that scuba diving in the Detroit RIver was an experience that neither Darryl or I will soon forget. We could only see about 2 feet in front of us, as we dragged ourselves upstream with screwdrivers! LOL!
you couldn't swim against the current, and it was strong, so strong in fact, that Darryl and I had to be tethered together with a big rope so as not to lose each other!
thankfully, we didn't find any drugs or dead bodies, but it would have been cool to find a gun or something.
i digress.....

fish are awesome, no doubt there, but people are more awesome!

i love weddings, not a doubt in my mind.

i wake up every day, so very thankful that i am doing what i'm doing.
i lose sleep every night, thinking of all the things i need to do, ideas that i have , and dreams that i can't wait to implement.
every time i meet a new couple, or get an email from a bride, i get all giddy and excited!
NEW PEOPLE TO MEET, ANOTHER AWESOME WEDDING TO DOCUMENT!!!
YAY!!
yep, that's the sound of my inside voice as it yells loudly inside my head.
i even say "YAY!" inside my head!
i know, i need some help.

do you ever have that feeling that something awesome is about to happen, but you don't have a clue what it might be?
i have had that feeling all week, and i can't shake it!
it's like the feeling that you have on Christmas eve, when you are all giddy, excited, and nervous about what's going to happen tomorrow! you know that you're going to get presents, but you just don't know what they might be.
it's a great feeling and a horrible feeling, all at the same time.
ya know what i'm sayin'?

well, this crazy feeling has been plaguing me all week!
please make it stop.
thank you.

i am just in the process of putting some photos together for my gallery on EverythingWedding.ca  which is, (if you've read my post from last week)  a resource and website for brides in Windsor Ontario and Essex County, to get info on everything and everything wedding! of course this meant that i would have to go through all my weddings from 2009 and pick my 10 faves.  did you know that picking favourite photos is NOT an easy job to do?
anyways, i found this photo of a flower girl and ring bearer, and i couldn't NOT put it up!
this was from a wedding that i 2nd shot for John Lyons, here in Kingsville, and this girl made me smile all day. she was a total angel and sweet to boot!
anyways, i love the 'serious' look that she's giving me, just before she walked down the aisle.
priceless.

there are always rules that govern us, and some of these rules are great (you know, like don't murder and steal) and some of these rules are silly (like not swimming right after eating).
as a photographer, and especially as a wedding photographer, i think , to some degree, i am expected to follow some rules.

when i took a photography course at the local college, we were given the task of photographing a model one evening. the model was set up in a chair, with her hands on a desk, and 25 photography students all stood or crouched right in front of her and fired away.
i didn't want to be doing what everyone else was doing (i'm the rebellious type), so i put my camera down, pulled a chair over to a spot not far from the model, and stood up on the chair.
i started taking photos from above, asking the model to look at me once in a while.
the instructor told me that what i was doing was wrong and not a flattering pose to any person.
i thought to myself, who made up that rule anyways?
why can't a photo from above be flattering?
why do we all have to be the same anyways?

i'm sure that the teacher was right, that it might not have made for a flattering pose, because he's probably done the same silly thing as i was trying, and figured it out the hard way. i appreciate when people try to share their wisdom with me, but......

this was a question that i pondered for quite a while, because i was actually doubting if i was right in questioning "the rules".
now, i would never kill someone or steal anything, but couldn't i break some photography rules once in a while?
i was just getting started on my journey as a photographer, and instead of wanting to learn the rules, all that kept my mind busy was finding ways to BREAK the rules and get the photos i wanted.
i think we can become so bound by what everyone else thinks is the right way to do something, that we sometimes forget to have some fun and try new things out.

i will admit, i am kind of a rebel.
seriously.
i am the woman that refuses to allow my hubby to open a jar for me, just out of principle!

once i began my journey as a wedding photographer, i had a goal in mind.
my goal was to be different, to find my voice, and i figured that the perfect clients would find their way to me.
i have been humbled by the wonderful couples that have chosen me to document their weddings, and i am enjoying getting to know every one of them!!!

today, i came across a list of "RULES" that were written by David Beckstead.
i appreciate David's work, because he looks outside the box, seems to always be having a great time, and is widely recognized by his peers in the photography world.
if you're a photographer , and you're reading this blog, then you might want to keep reading! i think we can not only get great photos by following some ground rules and the examples set by the countless AWESOME photographers in this world, but we also need to lighten up sometimes and just have fun. you never know what might happen.

here are the rules according to David~ (as found on www.prophotoresource.com)
David's rules to live by:

1. Break all photographic rules.don't leave any of them unbroken, at least once!
2. Take the safe shot.then break the rules with a passion!
3. From this point on the phrase "Breaking Rules" will be described as "Play".
4. You don't have to "Learn" the rules first before you are allowed to play!
5. When you play, it is for you..not the client. The client will benefit from your playtime!
6. Make sure that when you plan to play, that it will add some sort of twist to the image or composition. All blurry shots should be planned. Channel your playtime to maximize the chance of a great shot.
7. Learning to "Feel the dials and buttons" of your camera and "Hear you shutter" will help you play when you only have a few seconds.
8. Learn to play with the negative-spaces of a composition and bring them alive and useful to you.
9. Subject in the center is not always wrong. I love to break this rule!
10. Blowing out the highlights is not always wrong: especially when you are shooting backlit subjects.
11. Flare is great! Play with flare!
12. There is no "bad" light! This will be your mantra as you leave your house for the shoot. "There is no bad light! I will play today!"
13. Not looking through the camera when you shoot is a great way to learn the fine art of playing. If you are a wedding photographer: shoot at least 100 images a wedding without looking through the viewfinder.
14. Never tell a client that it was a mistake but the image turned out cool! Take credit for all great unplanned mistakes. Yet, try to duplicate the mistake later and add it to your stylistic repertoire. Never tell a client how many "play" images you took to get the killer shot. Show the client a few killer play shots as the shoot progresses. They will see that you are having fun and getting cool stuff and that will make them happy! Really!!
15. Make sure your future clients know you are a "Player". Show playful shots on your site and in your show albums.
16. The best time to play is when you are board, tired, apathetic, angry, hungry, hot, cold, have a headache, or when your mind tells you to hang and not play.
17. Play and your clients will love you for it!

these are great rules, and i think that this coming year is going to be fun!!!

hi all!

it looks as if i'm joining the ranks of thousands of wedding photographers before me, and i'm getting a booth at a local wedding & bridal show!
The Wedding Odyssey is here in Windsor , this coming weekend. the event is being held at the Ciocarro Club here in the city, which is just off Walker Rd, south of the 401 (look for the signs).
i'm a nervous wreck!!!
i have never built a booth, have never been to a wedding show even as a guest, and it's tough to know what to do or expect.
i've been scouring the internet and wedding forums, trying to look at photos of other booths, see what other wedding photographers like to do, and get a sense as to the best way for ME to build something.
you see, i have some pretty clear ideas about what i like and dislike, and one of the things i dislike the most is conformity!!!
i like to be different, i like to be myself, and i just like being me.

i have a tiny little spot at the show, down at the end of some long, dark hall, so it's been tough to know how to proceed with designing something that will not only showcase my photography, but help to get people at actually NOTICE me at the end of this dark hallway.
i think what i've come up with is fun and original, and i'm looking forward to putting it all together.
i think i will do a mock-up tonight, in my living room , so that i can get the full effect.

it's CRAZY!!!

if you're coming to the Wedding Odyssey, please make sure that you stop by and say hello.
i would love to meet some new people!

since no post is complete without a photo, then please enjoy the following.
i'll just let you know right now, that if you hire me and you have kids at your wedding, then i WILL BE TAKING PHOTOS OF THEM!!
i LOVE kids and the silly things they do, and there's nothing more fun than kids dancing.

this one makes me smile :)

Engagement sessions are FUN!!!!

There is something exciting about getting to know my wedding clients on a deeper level, and nothing gets people to open up more, than to get them out in the snow!
Actually, since I'm a talker and i love hearing about what makes people tick, i don't really need a snow storm or anything else. One of the things that i adore about being a wedding photographer, is that i get to meet so many wonderful people.
If you are a potential bride or groom, and you are reading this post, please note that i don't like to talk about the weather, the stock market, or politics. Fluff conversations are not my thing, because i love to hear about where you grew up, how long you've been dating, how the proposal took place, and i especially want to hear all the gory details about your wedding! I want to hear about your wedding dress, the awesome bridesmaid's dresses, the gorgeous invitations and your honeymoon plans!
i like to be open, honest and real.
it's just me, and i can't change.

i guess that's why i adore engagement sessions so much.  Engagement sessions are relaxed, fun, and a good time for me (as a wedding photographer) to get to know my clients a bit better. It's tough to talk on a wedding day, for obvious reasons, so during an engagement session, feel free to talk away!!
laugh, laugh, and laugh some more, and if you have time, nail your beloved with a snowball!

Rob and Leslie are getting married in April , at Willistead Manor (here in Windsor), and i have the honour of being their wedding photographer.  i have heard a rumour that there might be muscle cars at this wedding, and i'm hoping that the rumours are true!!
oh, and i have a special place in my heart for Leslie, and it has nothing to do with photography.
as a special treat to my 2010 clients, this year i made each of my couples a homemade treat.  i LOVE making candy at Christmas, and this year i made a few of my favourite sugary treats and mailed some off to each couple. Leslie and Rob ended up with some of my pralines, and i got the most wonderful compliment from Leslie.
Leslie grew up in the south, and she swears that my pralines are as good as any southerner can make!
yep, i am definitely tickled with that kind of compliment.

anyways, here are a few of the highlights from the day

there is something magical about being in love.
it's that feeling down deep in your soul, when you just know that you are meant to marry your best friend, and spend the rest of your lives making each other happy.
that's the kind of love that Josh and Arica share.
you might think that it's not possible for me to know how deep their love flows, but i beg to differ!
you see , Arica is a good friend and fellow wedding photographer, and i have seen her crush on Josh, blossom into a deep love, right before my eyes.
i have been working alongside Arica for quite a few weddings this year, and when we first started working together this past spring, i remember quite clearly the day she asked me what i thought of Josh. i have known Josh and his wonderful family, for about 7 years now, and Arica admitted to me that she had a crush on him and was hoping they would someday date.
well, the first date turned into many dates, and i quickly saw that they were meant to be together, forever and ever.
Arica has become a dear friend in the last 7 months, and i can't wait to watch her and Josh get married and spend the rest of their lives together.
one of the big reasons i am also super happy about Arica and Josh's upcoming marriage, is that i can tell that their love is just as awesome as the love that Darryl and i share.

there aren't many couples that can still say that they are more in love today than they were on the day they got married 20 years ago, but Darryl and i can say that. we adore each other, to the depths of our souls, and i can't imagine being married to anyone else.
from what i can see, Josh and Arica are just as perfect for each other as my Darryl and i.
they are truly blessed.

i am also thrilled to be able to photograph Arica and Josh's wedding next spring, at Heritage Village in Harrow Ontario (which is 20 minutes from Windsor).
i am blessed with great friends, and i count Arica as a true gift from God.

just take a look at how happy these two are. you can see it in their eyes.
oh, and if you didn't already know this about me.....
i LOVE eyes.

I love these images. The fall colors are lovely. It's been years since I visited southern Ontario but I remember it being very lovely. (Used to visit to dive the 19th century wrecks... primarily schooners... in the Peelee Passage area). We don't get a lot of fall color here in North Carolina... mostly pine forests along the coastal areas.

my dear blog readers,

I apologize for the long space between posts, but i am i have been away for a few days.
On Monday morning, I packed up my ugly minivan, with camera gear, computer and clothes, and drove across the border and to the town of Ann Arbor Michigan. Is it a city or a town?
I don't know, so sorry if i offend any residents!
i was on a journey to the Finao head office, where they were hosting a workshop, lead by the incomparable Chuck Arlund .
i have to admit, that 2 months ago, i had never heard of Chuck Arlund, let alone had the desire to take a workshop led by him.
that all changed when Finao decided to sponsor a workshop, and have Chuck come for 3 days to teach his rockstar skills and some off-camera lighting techniques.
i got the memo, looked up his website, emailed Zach Gray (who's also from Nashville and i thought he might have heard of Chuck) and quickly decided that this was the workshop for me.
off-camera lighting has always been something i've wanted to learn and perfect, but i've never met a wedding photographer around Windsor, that even uses an off-camera flash, let alone wan to teach me!
i knew i was on my own, but eager to learn. i've been reading blogs, websites, and forum posts about the elusive off-camera flash, pocket wizards, and the like, but it doesn't all make sense unless you can see it in action.
after i got lost and ended up on a little dirt road in the middle of nowhere, i made it safely to the Finao headquarters and met Chuck and my 6 other classmates 3 of whom i already knew (yep, small world).
i have to admit, that on Monday, i had the feeling (a few times) that my head was going to explode from all the data being shoved into the small space that i have left in there for new things. Chuck went over about a zillion items, from posing to photoshop, to art and beyond, and then out the door we went for a field trip! we were learning to find the perfect light, or the sweet spot and Chuck calls it.
tuesday was flash day, and after we all got over our fear of taking the flash OFF the camera, and learning about pocket wizards and radio poppers, ring lights and video lights. we had another little field trip, with a cute little model, and spent the day trying to learn the technique of having light on our side, and not fighting with it so much.
it was inspiring.
i didn't get very many photos with the flash (about 5 or 6) since there were a few people in the group that seemed to want tons, and we were sharing one set of pocket wizards between us all. it doesn't matter too much, since even in those 5 photos, i could see what Chuck was teaching us, and the by observing i learned even more.
it was a long day, but my head didn't explode, so that makes it another awesome day! LOL!
the 3rd day was mostly spent just going over a few photos in class, and then we all headed out the door and to the Detroit Institute of Art, for and Avedon exhibit.
wow, that's quite the exhibit!

i don't know what it is......
i just love getting the chance to meet new people, and make new friends. when making new friends is combined with learning and growing as an artist, then it's even BETTER!!!!
in my heart of hearts, i know that photography is my way of being an artist. i am thrilled to have had to opportunity to have my eyes opened to new things, be inspired by artists i'd never heard of before, and get to meet Chuck.
it was a wonderful 3 days.

here  are 2 photos from the tuesday photo session.
i will be spending the winter, practicing and perfecting the technique, so that i can start bringing an edge to my art.

this past Saturday, I worked alongside Arica Ingratta, and we rocked out another fun wedding!
i don't know where all these wonderful people come from, but i was blown away by the kind and considerate people i got to spend the day with!

i will start out by saying, that when i arrived at the groom's house, to photograph all the guys getting ready, i didn't have a clue what i was stepping into! i will just say, that have 11 groomsmen is not only a bit crazy, but it makes for a super fun time with the guys!
it's the biggest wedding party i've ever photographed, but they made it painless and had me laughing almost instantly (which isn't hard to to by the way).
a big, loving and fun, italian family, complete with HUGE cookie and sandwich trays. Sammy's mom made me take a baggie of cookies in the car with me, just in case i got low blood sugar sometime during the day! such a great mom!
my son Cameron ate all of the cookies on the way to church the next day, since he found the un-opened baggie and gobbled down 7 cookies in about 3 minutes! i guess that's just what 13 year old boys do.
ok, back to the wedding.
the wedding ceremony was held at the beautiful Assumption Church on the campus of the University of Windsor.
i had never photographed a wedding there before, and lets just say that it was a tad overwhelming when i first walked it, but i was enthralled by it's beauty and history. i am a sucker for an old church, and even though i'm not Catholic, i can appreciate the love that went into building such a gorgeous church.  i even snuck up to the organ loft (i LOVE pipe organs) and i went and stood inside the organ as it was playing! yep, i'm a nerd and i wanted to see how the thing looked inside. it was pretty cool.
the weather cleared up after the ceremony, and we headed over the Branteaney's Bed & Breakfast (in Lasalle) for the photos. what a beautiful place!
i was able to stalk a deer and get a pretty decent photo of it.  i love taking photographs of wildlife.
the reception was held at the Fogolar Furlan in Windsor, and Arica and i had a great time hanging out with the videographer , John Chan and his assistant.

i think i am the luckiest girl in the world.
i can't believe that i actually LOVE going to work on saturdays, being on my feet for 8-14 hours straight, and coming home so tired i think i'm gonna die!
it's the best job ever.

videographer ~ John Chan, Rolling Shutter Video Productions

so this is the HUGE group of guys i encountered at the groom's house!
SALUT!!

i am blessed.

i just wanted to let you know, that i am a blessed woman. i am blessed with a wonderful family, an extraordinary hubby, and a career that brings more pleasure to my life than i could ever have imagined possible.

now that i have that public announcement out of the way, i will get on to chronicling about the fantabulous (that's my new favourite, made-up word of the day) wedding that i had the honour of photographing this past weekend.
about 6 weeks ago, i was contacted by Kalyna, who needed to find a wedding photographer ASAP, since her already booked photographer, had to go to Tanzania on a job with World Vision. i was tickled that i was free on the day of her wedding, so we spoke over the phone about the details, and i was excited when i heard that her and Fraser were having a traditional Ukranian wedding service.
how wonderfully unique.
i also realized that Kalyna was super sweet, and i couldn't wait to meet her in person.
this past Saturday, i picked up my awesome 2nd shooter, Julie Rhodes, and we made the trek to Terra Cotta Ontario (near Caledon) which is just a few kilometres from Brampton & Georgetown. it was a bit of a hike ( almost 4 hours) from Windsor/Kingsville, but it was definitely worth the drive.
when we arrived at the bride's house, we realized that this was going to be a special event.
there was so much love in that house!!!!!
Kalyna was easy going and fun to work with, and Fraser was also fun and easy going, so we had a blast with these two!
oh, and the service and reception were held at the most unique church i've ever seen! it's a Ukranian Catholic Church, just outside of Brampton and it looks like it belongs in Europe somewhere. Julie and I squealed when we started up the driveway to the church, since we knew right then and there that it was going to be a lot of fun!

here are a few photos from our fantabulous day.
thanks to Kalyna, Fraser and their wonderful families, for making my job super easy.

service & reception were held at : St.Elias Church, Brampton Ontario

a few weeks ago, i had the honour of photographing Susan & Faisal's small, Pakinstan/Indian muslim wedding. i had never had the chance to be involved in a muslim wedding, so this was a wonderful and new experience for me.
i do have to admit that i felt badly that i didn't wear something that covered the tattoos on my legs, since the Imam was present. ooooooops!
Susan & Faisal's little ceremony, took place in the home of Faisal's mom, right in the heart of Windsor. there were only a handful of people present , but that didn't matter at all.
Faisal & Susan are in love and ready to face the challenges ahead as they begin their new life together.
i do have to say , that being a wedding photographer has to be the best job in the world! not only do i get to meet with the best people around, witness love first hand, and get to take photographs that document a special day, but i get to see all sorts of different types of weddings! in all honesty, i think that Indian weddings are SPECTACULAR!!! look at these colours!
oh, and i forgot to mention the Indian food. what's with those great flavours and awesome smells? i was forced to leave the wedding with a heaping plate of goodies, and of course i didn't complain one little bit :)

first off, i want to welcome you to my new blog!
this is the first official post in my new home, and i hope you like the new set-up.

there are a few bugs that need to be ironed out, but so far so good. actually, i have been pulling my hair out while figuring out a few things, but i'm on the right track and hopefully everything will be up an running properly, very shortly.

for my first official post in my new blog-home, i wanted to post a few photos from today's photoshoot in Toronto.

sarah and tyler are a young couple from the Windsor area, and they have been living in Toronto all summer. they asked if id be willing to come to Toronto to photograph them for their first anniversary. of course i obliged, because they are awesome and i've never officially photographed anyone in the big T.O yet!
i am from there originally, but i've only ever been a photographer here in the Windsor area.

sarah & tyler were one of the first couples that i photographed last fall, when i decided to pursue photography as a career. i was offering a bunch of free photo-sessions to build my portfolio, and they jumped at the chance. we had a blast!
i'm so very happy that they are still in love and are celebrating their first anniversary this month.

for our first location, we headed to the Brickworks , and for our second location, we travelled quite a ways through construction, to the abandoned Kodak building.
i just want to say that we nearly died from heat exhaustion, and we came close to having a run in with a vagrant that had taken up residence in the abandoned Kodak building! sarah had crawled through a window (and i was going to follow) when she heard someone yelling and some footsteps, and we quickly decided to stay outside for the rest of the time! LOL!

man, it was steamy and HOT today!

i am getting excited!!! michele bowman photography is changing it's look and it's name, and this week i'm going to be diligently working on my new website and NEW blog!! i purchased some new templates from Into the Darkroom, and they just need some lovin' from me before i can get them live. i am currently buried under mounds of photos to sort through. i need to make sure that everything that makes my new website galleries, is up to my strict standards ! LOL! with all these changes, comes a change in name and focus. as i've written before, i am currently in LOVE with photographing weddings. my career didn't begin that way, but weddings have worked there way into my heart, and it was love at first shoot. i originally wanted to focus on family and kids, since there is nothing as fun as chasing a kid around a park for a photo! really. for some reason, God brought wedding photography into my life, and while i am still young enough to endure the crazy physical demands of wedding photography, i will give it my energy and my all. i didn't realize how many wedding photographers ACTUALLY lived and worked in Windsor Ontario & surrounding areas, but instead of discouraging me, the numbers have actually made me want to work even harder to stand out in a crowd. i am finding my OWN HILL (as Kevin Swan puts it) and making it my goal to bring another aspect of wedding photography to the Windsor market. i have always loved being an individual, and my wedding photography will be no different. i do have to say that i was super excited the other day after talking to a potential client. she actually 'GOT' me and what i want to show the world through my wedding photography! you can't even imagine how wonderful it felt to be understood, and have a client WANT to hire you because i am just what they are looking for. trust me when i say that i have always known what style  of photography i wanted to bring to the market, but it's been a journey getting there. i don't feel that i have arrived, but at least i know i'm on the right track. i look forward (more than you can imagine) to working with client's who's vision for their wedding photography matches my vision for photography and telling their story. i don't want to be the photographer for everyone, but i want to be the photographer to people with the same artistic vision as myself. they are bound to be matches made in heaven. this journey into the fantastical (yep, my new word) world of wedding photography has been exciting so far, and with my new branding work and new marketing materials, i will be  starting on a new path with an even more focused vision! i am so very thankful for all the love and support i have been getting from my family, friends and other photographers. your comments on my blog and support on facebook, have meant more to me than you can imagine. so, i'm just letting you know that changes are on the horizon, and hopefully i will be able to get my new blog up and running by the end of this week or so. i will have a new domain name , but i'll make sure to keep you all posted on any changes. now, to post a photograph that has NOTHING to do with wedding photography, but has everything to do with my love and passion. underwater photography gave me my start into the world of cameras! the ocean is truly my love.

this past saturday, i had the pleasure of second shooting for Arica Ingratta of Manifesto Photography at a wedding here in Windsor. it was a beautiful day for a wedding. when i got to the church, i recognized the bride's mom as someone i once knew, and realized that this family had attended the same church that we used to attend years ago. it was nice to see them again, and it was weird to see all the girls grown up! the last time i saw this family, the girls were teenagers! man, i'm feeling old lately!

kingsville is where i live, and it was the setting for a beautiful wedding that i photographed this past saturday. kingsville, is about 1/2 and hour outside windsor, ontario, and we are right on lake erie. it's a very nice little town and a great place to live. i had the opportunity to work with wedding photographer, John Lyons , for the very first time. it was a blast! John is a great guy and a wonderful wedding photographer, and i was thrilled to have the chance to work with him.  he's also like the energizer bunny, and seems to have the energy to just keep on going and going! i have also just hired John and his graphic design company to take on my branding/marketing work. this will be a fun summer! our day started at Anjolie salon in Leamington, and that was the beginning of our marathon wedding photography day! in total, we photographed in 10 locations and the day lasted 13.5 hours for us! we ended the day at the Roma Club in Leamington, where a beautiful, fairytale reception was hosted. i was so tired when i got home, but it was the wonderful kind of exhaustion that you feel when you've been scuba diving all day and sleep comes instantly! wonderful. adam and lisa are both from the kingsville area, and are highschool sweethearts. they started dating in grade 9, and at 22 years old they got married. i have a soft spot for highschool love stories, since the hubby and i started dating in grade8/9 too! you could tell by the looks that they gave each other, that they are deeply committed and in love. it was a beautiful day. there was so much love from family and friends, that Adam & Lisa just sailed through the day, happy and smiling every second. i had a really hard time picking just a few photos for this blog post, so please don't get mad at the crazy amount of photos. after saturday, i think i am even more in love with wedding photography than ever before! yeah, it was crazy & exhausting, but i love being so intimately involved with such a special moment in people's lives. i also just realized that saying that i'm a 'wedding photographer' sounds like the cheeziest career choice around! HAH! ok, here is some eye candy for you!
