Welcome about

I'd love to hear from you, so please click HERE to get in touch. I look forward to hearing more about your wedding day plans and details.

You have just arrived at my blog, and I welcome you!

This blog is just a place where I write about my journey as a wedding photographer, as a mother, wife and friend.

I am an illustrative wedding photographer, located just outside Windsor Ontario.  I have a huge love of photojournalism, black and white photography, and weddings that make me cry! I don't like the ordinary, I love being different, and I put my heart and soul into everything I do.

My kids are my greatest treasure and my hubby my greatest love.

I feel that this quote summarizes me and my outlook on business....

"Always hold on to the truth. Don't let others sway your heart. Don't compromise yourself for the sake of temporal groovyness. Be Deeply Funky. Be separate from the crowd that's awash with normality, by standing on a firm foundation. Never waver in your love or faith ...." - John Fluevog.

a windsor ontario wedding~

last weekend, i had the honour of documenting Steve & Natalie's wedding here in Windsor.
what a great day.

Steve & Natalie were blessed with a rainy day, and i mean BIGTIME rain. i'm told that rain on a wedding day is supposed to be good luck for a marriage, and if that's the case then these two newlyweds are in for a lifetime of luck!

now , photographing a wedding in the rain can be tricky, especially if you are worried about getting wet or dirty, but Steve & Natalie were such great sports! i want to thank them for being willing to work a blue doorway, get a bit creative with an umbrella, and find shelter under a big tree.
all for the sake of having fun and getting some outside wedding photos.

i know that i seem to always gush about love, family, and weddings, but i'm a sucker for all things love.
you see, i am easily moved.
too much so sometimes.
i will admit one thing...... i am always deeply moved by father/daughter & mother/son dances.
there is something so pure, so raw, and so intimate during some of these dances, and it pulls at my heartstrings every time.
this wedding did that to me.
it was beautiful to watch.
i feel honoured to have witnessed it.

Steve & Natalie.
thank you for allowing me to have a small glimpse into your lives. thank you for being willing to suffer the elements for the sake of a few photos. thank you for having such a cute and adorable dog (i really liked him). thank you for hiring me to document your wedding and trusting me to capture your moments and memories.
i wish you every happiness in the world.

as you all know, most of my blog posts are weddings and engagement session these days, which leads me to look at my life and think that's all i do these days!
it just isn't so!!!

believe it or not, a wedding photographer can have a semblance of a normal life during this insane and crazy time of the year, but it requires leaving the city and computer behind.
leaving life behind is no easy feat when you have a business to run, but i'm all about making sacrifices for the sake of my family and for my sanity, so i bit the bullet, closed up my computer, and away we went!!

we left the humid and hot city of Windsor, for the more temperate climate up north a bit. Tobermory Ontario was our destination, and how lovely it was.
clear skies, no humidity, and living in a tent.
there is nothing more wonderful than sleeping in a tent.
while Windsor melted under scorching heat and oppressive humidity, the family and i basked in humidity free days, snorkeled in the chilly waters of Georgian Bay, and ate too much sugar.
there were even a few days that were so chilly, that we had to wear sweatshirts & socks, drink hot chocolate, and sit huddled around the campfire!! with the humidex in Windsor being over 40C most of this summer, the break from the heat was a nice reprieve.

i was blessed to be able to spend a week with my kiddies and the hubby, where we played lots of card games, ate ice cream, hiked the trails of the Bruce Peninsula, snorkeled 20C waters, laughed lots, slept in tents, roasted lots of marshmallows, and sang the Fish & Chips song.
oh, and we are insane enough to camp where there is no electricity or hot water (which includes showers), because that's the best way to camp and we are just a little bit this side of crazy.

i'm posting a few photos from my adventure, which were all taken with my Canon G11 and NOT my DSLR (which i left in my camera bag all week). hiking over rocky terrain and hanging near water, doesn't lend itself to slugging a big heavy camera. i love my G11.

as you'll see, i'm a big fan of macro photography (which i love doing when shooting underwater loveliness), and i tried my hand at some macro work above-ground this time around. not too bad i must say. of course, i still prefer finding microscopic fish to photograph, but now i realize that i'm not adverse to finding funny caterpillars or funky mushroom, both which are much easier to capture than an unpredictable and quick moving fish.

first off, here are my sweet and wonderful kiddies (yep, i have a kid with a beard). i love these awesome young people with everything and every breath in me. being a mom is my most notable achievement thus far, and i wouldn't trade it for anything.

this past weekend, i had the great privilege of documenting another fabulous wedding here in Windsor.
i do have to preface this blog post by saying that the weather here in Windsor has been way too hot for weddings this past July, and i think from now on i'm going to suggest to all July brides, that they plan for a hawaiin themed wedding. shorts, t-shirts, and maybe a slip & slide or a sprinkler (for the guests to enjoy).
it's been CRAZY HOT!!!!

ok, i'm back to the wedding post now.

Catherine & Joe's wedding was not just a hot wedding, but it was a lovely wedding.
i met these two lovebirds last Christmas, for the very first time, even though Catherine had hired me to document her wedding during a phone call last summer. these two make Boston their home, and i was so blessed that i was able to be involved in their big day.
when i first spoke to Catherine, she had mentioned that originally they had dreamed of a small and intimate affair, but quickly realized that their dream wedding was going to be something very different.
Catherine is Croatian, and Joe is French. small and intimate weddings are not in either of these group's vocabulary.
i am part french canadian, and i know that not only is family a HUGE deal, but the party WITH the family is super important!!!
i found out that Croatian's are no different.

it's all about the family, the love, the friends, the family (i had to mention that again since it's so important), and the gathering together to surround a newly married couple with blessings and hugs!
oh, and there needs to be a lot of food and desserts.
don't even get me started on the sweet tables!!! oh my !!
i always wish i not only had time to eat dessert when i'm at a wedding, but that i actually had room to eat some of the sweets. i'm always too full after dinner!

a big thank you goes out to Joe & Catherine, for not only being a terribly sweet and loving couple, but for having fun with me on your wedding day! it is always so wonderful to be a witness to the wedding of two people that absolutely adore each other, and you two were no different.
i wish you all the love and happiness in the world, and i am so very blessed to have met you both.
Catherine, your wedding dress is my most favourite dress EVER!! thanks for buying it so that i could photograph it!

now, onto photographs!!

July 2009

i get an email from Leslie, asking if i might be available to document her wedding to Rob, in the spring of 2010.
after a lovely phone conversation, i was excited at the possibility of working with this great couple from Arizona and we set up a time to meet on Labour Day weekend (when they were in town to book their wedding venue).

Christmas 2009

Rob and Leslie bundle up and we head outdoors for a snowy engagement session. I was able to get to know these two a little better, and they made my day when they agreed to have a snowball fight and take each other down in the snow!! it made for some wonderful photos and some good laughs.

April 3rd 2010

the big day.

i arrived at Caesar's Hotel in Windsor, to capture the girls getting ready. i do have to say that it's about a 3 mile walk (or so it seemed) from the parking garage to the hotel foyer, and that would have been fine except for the fact that i was carrying 100 lbs (ok, maybe 20-ish) pounds of camera gear on my shoulders . a rolling camera bag would have come in handy.
sorry, i digress......
oh, and i was entertained along my hike, by the zillion or so, slot machines that are all lit up and make fun sounds. weird.
the hotel was lovely, and the girls were ready for the big day.
Leslie was just glowing, and doing well to keep any nerves under wrap.  i love being with the bride as she gets ready, since it's always a time of fun and friendship, and to have your best friends helping you get ready makes it even more special.
Leslie was surrounded by friends and family,  and she was a stunning bride.
My assistant for the day, Arica, was with the guys as they got themselves together.

Onward to WIllistead Manor in Old Walkerville, for an intimate service and reception.
Everything was running smoothly, until the power went out right before the ceremony, due to the very gusty winds outside. Luckily there was a window in the room, the music was live, and i have a flash for my camera!!! Yay for camera flashes and live musicians!!!
the ceremony was lovely, and tears were flowing.
Rob and Leslie just adore each other to pieces, and it's very evident whenever you see them together.

unfortunately, due to the gusty winds outside, we had to stay indoors for photos, so i'm thankful that Willistead Manor is so beautiful.

the dinner and party continued into the night, and it was a pleasure to be among such a lovely bunch of people.

i want to thank Rob & Leslie, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to be a part of their lives.  i also want to thank them for hiring me to document their wedding, especially when they knew that i was fairly new to the art of wedding photography. your support and trust in my abilities makes me feel so very humbled.  it's clients like you that inspire me and the reason that i adore this job so very much.
Rob, i want to apologize to you for encouraging Leslie to get a 50mm 1.8f lens, which seems to have jumpstarted her love of good (expensive) lenses. i hope you still like me after you hear what some of these lenses cost!!!

yesterday, my good friend and fellow wedding photographer, Jayme Morrison and I, took to the streets of Windsor to scout some cool new shooting locations for our upcoming wedding season.
ummmm......
it didn't go very well.

you see, we got off to a rocky start when we got sidetracked by talking too much, and then we realized that we were driving aimlessly around! we quickly got back on track, tried to focus, and then decided that we needed to eat.
we have our priorities ya know.

after a yummy lunch and some good conversation at Chanoso's , right in downtown Windsor, we set off on foot to discover some treasures. actually, we thought we might get lucky and come across some REALLY great shooting locations, but we soon realized that it wasn't going to be our lucky day.

well, what do you do when you can't find any awesome locations?
you photograph OTHER COOL STUFF!

some of our finds of the day include an alley with cool shadows, a fair trade store that smelled like incense and had a Matryoshka doll with the face of Vladmir Putin,  a night club called the Boom Boom Room (i like the name),  a Windsor Symphony schedule so that Jayme can take her son to the Peanut Butter n' Jam concerts,  and some mud.

all in all, it wasn't a total loss.
you see, i had a great time getting to know Jayme better, it was beautiful and sunny outside and we got to walk around AND it was a day away from work at the computer, which doesn't happen very often.

here are a few photos from our adventures in Windsor...

there are always rules that govern us, and some of these rules are great (you know, like don't murder and steal) and some of these rules are silly (like not swimming right after eating).
as a photographer, and especially as a wedding photographer, i think , to some degree, i am expected to follow some rules.

when i took a photography course at the local college, we were given the task of photographing a model one evening. the model was set up in a chair, with her hands on a desk, and 25 photography students all stood or crouched right in front of her and fired away.
i didn't want to be doing what everyone else was doing (i'm the rebellious type), so i put my camera down, pulled a chair over to a spot not far from the model, and stood up on the chair.
i started taking photos from above, asking the model to look at me once in a while.
the instructor told me that what i was doing was wrong and not a flattering pose to any person.
i thought to myself, who made up that rule anyways?
why can't a photo from above be flattering?
why do we all have to be the same anyways?

i'm sure that the teacher was right, that it might not have made for a flattering pose, because he's probably done the same silly thing as i was trying, and figured it out the hard way. i appreciate when people try to share their wisdom with me, but......

this was a question that i pondered for quite a while, because i was actually doubting if i was right in questioning "the rules".
now, i would never kill someone or steal anything, but couldn't i break some photography rules once in a while?
i was just getting started on my journey as a photographer, and instead of wanting to learn the rules, all that kept my mind busy was finding ways to BREAK the rules and get the photos i wanted.
i think we can become so bound by what everyone else thinks is the right way to do something, that we sometimes forget to have some fun and try new things out.

i will admit, i am kind of a rebel.
seriously.
i am the woman that refuses to allow my hubby to open a jar for me, just out of principle!

once i began my journey as a wedding photographer, i had a goal in mind.
my goal was to be different, to find my voice, and i figured that the perfect clients would find their way to me.
i have been humbled by the wonderful couples that have chosen me to document their weddings, and i am enjoying getting to know every one of them!!!

today, i came across a list of "RULES" that were written by David Beckstead.
i appreciate David's work, because he looks outside the box, seems to always be having a great time, and is widely recognized by his peers in the photography world.
if you're a photographer , and you're reading this blog, then you might want to keep reading! i think we can not only get great photos by following some ground rules and the examples set by the countless AWESOME photographers in this world, but we also need to lighten up sometimes and just have fun. you never know what might happen.

here are the rules according to David~ (as found on www.prophotoresource.com)
David's rules to live by:

1. Break all photographic rules.don't leave any of them unbroken, at least once!
2. Take the safe shot.then break the rules with a passion!
3. From this point on the phrase "Breaking Rules" will be described as "Play".
4. You don't have to "Learn" the rules first before you are allowed to play!
5. When you play, it is for you..not the client. The client will benefit from your playtime!
6. Make sure that when you plan to play, that it will add some sort of twist to the image or composition. All blurry shots should be planned. Channel your playtime to maximize the chance of a great shot.
7. Learning to "Feel the dials and buttons" of your camera and "Hear you shutter" will help you play when you only have a few seconds.
8. Learn to play with the negative-spaces of a composition and bring them alive and useful to you.
9. Subject in the center is not always wrong. I love to break this rule!
10. Blowing out the highlights is not always wrong: especially when you are shooting backlit subjects.
11. Flare is great! Play with flare!
12. There is no "bad" light! This will be your mantra as you leave your house for the shoot. "There is no bad light! I will play today!"
13. Not looking through the camera when you shoot is a great way to learn the fine art of playing. If you are a wedding photographer: shoot at least 100 images a wedding without looking through the viewfinder.
14. Never tell a client that it was a mistake but the image turned out cool! Take credit for all great unplanned mistakes. Yet, try to duplicate the mistake later and add it to your stylistic repertoire. Never tell a client how many "play" images you took to get the killer shot. Show the client a few killer play shots as the shoot progresses. They will see that you are having fun and getting cool stuff and that will make them happy! Really!!
15. Make sure your future clients know you are a "Player". Show playful shots on your site and in your show albums.
16. The best time to play is when you are board, tired, apathetic, angry, hungry, hot, cold, have a headache, or when your mind tells you to hang and not play.
17. Play and your clients will love you for it!

these are great rules, and i think that this coming year is going to be fun!!!

hi all!

it looks as if i'm joining the ranks of thousands of wedding photographers before me, and i'm getting a booth at a local wedding & bridal show!
The Wedding Odyssey is here in Windsor , this coming weekend. the event is being held at the Ciocarro Club here in the city, which is just off Walker Rd, south of the 401 (look for the signs).
i'm a nervous wreck!!!
i have never built a booth, have never been to a wedding show even as a guest, and it's tough to know what to do or expect.
i've been scouring the internet and wedding forums, trying to look at photos of other booths, see what other wedding photographers like to do, and get a sense as to the best way for ME to build something.
you see, i have some pretty clear ideas about what i like and dislike, and one of the things i dislike the most is conformity!!!
i like to be different, i like to be myself, and i just like being me.

i have a tiny little spot at the show, down at the end of some long, dark hall, so it's been tough to know how to proceed with designing something that will not only showcase my photography, but help to get people at actually NOTICE me at the end of this dark hallway.
i think what i've come up with is fun and original, and i'm looking forward to putting it all together.
i think i will do a mock-up tonight, in my living room , so that i can get the full effect.

it's CRAZY!!!

if you're coming to the Wedding Odyssey, please make sure that you stop by and say hello.
i would love to meet some new people!

since no post is complete without a photo, then please enjoy the following.
i'll just let you know right now, that if you hire me and you have kids at your wedding, then i WILL BE TAKING PHOTOS OF THEM!!
i LOVE kids and the silly things they do, and there's nothing more fun than kids dancing.

this one makes me smile :)

Engagement sessions are FUN!!!!

There is something exciting about getting to know my wedding clients on a deeper level, and nothing gets people to open up more, than to get them out in the snow!
Actually, since I'm a talker and i love hearing about what makes people tick, i don't really need a snow storm or anything else. One of the things that i adore about being a wedding photographer, is that i get to meet so many wonderful people.
If you are a potential bride or groom, and you are reading this post, please note that i don't like to talk about the weather, the stock market, or politics. Fluff conversations are not my thing, because i love to hear about where you grew up, how long you've been dating, how the proposal took place, and i especially want to hear all the gory details about your wedding! I want to hear about your wedding dress, the awesome bridesmaid's dresses, the gorgeous invitations and your honeymoon plans!
i like to be open, honest and real.
it's just me, and i can't change.

i guess that's why i adore engagement sessions so much.  Engagement sessions are relaxed, fun, and a good time for me (as a wedding photographer) to get to know my clients a bit better. It's tough to talk on a wedding day, for obvious reasons, so during an engagement session, feel free to talk away!!
laugh, laugh, and laugh some more, and if you have time, nail your beloved with a snowball!

Rob and Leslie are getting married in April , at Willistead Manor (here in Windsor), and i have the honour of being their wedding photographer.  i have heard a rumour that there might be muscle cars at this wedding, and i'm hoping that the rumours are true!!
oh, and i have a special place in my heart for Leslie, and it has nothing to do with photography.
as a special treat to my 2010 clients, this year i made each of my couples a homemade treat.  i LOVE making candy at Christmas, and this year i made a few of my favourite sugary treats and mailed some off to each couple. Leslie and Rob ended up with some of my pralines, and i got the most wonderful compliment from Leslie.
Leslie grew up in the south, and she swears that my pralines are as good as any southerner can make!
yep, i am definitely tickled with that kind of compliment.

anyways, here are a few of the highlights from the day

I really like the ones that were next to the old, broken down building. The color in the bricks and in the siding really pop in the snow. Nice!

The above quote, not only describes how I feel about myself and my business, but I think it describes the type of clients that have entrusted me to document their wedding day.

There is something so deeply personal about hiring the right wedding photographer, because you not only have to hire someone that you can trust to take great photographs, but you want to hire someone that just 'gets' you as a couple.

I am passionate about capturing emotion, documenting every moment, showcasing the unique details that make your wedding day 'yours', and having a ton of fun along the way.

From the moment I meet my clients, until the day that I hand over their custom designed, heirloom album, each and every couple is deeply important to me. I do my very best to pay attention to detail, make every effort to provide the best service I possibly can,  and put my all into providing photos that will be timeless and emotionally driven.

Please feel free to call me @ 519-965-0340 to discuss your photography needs.
i am availble for wedding photography anywhere in the Windsor Ontario area and beyond.
