ok, so it's not wednesday and i haven't done a shout out for a while now.
i thought it was a good time to remedy that.
this week, i wanted to do something different. i decided that i wanted to interview a photographer, and who better to choose than my good friend and colleague, Amber Chudy of
.
i met Amber last December, at a photographer's get together in Chatham Ontario, put on by my other friend, John Lyons. (btw... i feel blessed to be able to call these awesome photographers my friends).
we had a little chat that night, and Amber shared with me her love for boudoir photography. actually, i thought that it was definately more than love for boudoir photography, it was a PASSION for boudoir photography!
it was January that we touched base again, and this time it was at a wedding. Amber was the first photographer to give me a chance to do some wedding photography, and she had me come along to try it out.
it was there, at that wedding, that i fell in love with wedding photography. since then, Amber has hired me to shoot about 8 more weddings with her this year, and we've become good friends in the process.
Amber is a beautiful young woman, inside and out, and i'm blessed that she's in my life.
boudoir photography takes a special kind of photographer, especially when you aren't working with models but just ordinary women, rolls and all.
Amber usually does her boudoir sessions out of the Retro Suites in Chatham Ontario, so if you live anywhere in Southwestern Ontario, look on her blog for her Diva Days schedule.
here is my interview with Amber and a few of her awesome photos.
1- Painted Amber Photography is an unusual name. How did it come about?
"Unusual" ...Is that a good or a bad thing? haha Well, to make a long story short, I grew up raising horses. My favourite horse of all time was/is my beautiful tobiano APHA gelding "Rip" (he farts when he lopes... I didn't pick it but it's appropriate - haha) and since he was the love of my life for so many years, I called myself "Painted" by my beautiful paint. And then I realized my name was a colour so it worked nicely together. I've been "Painted Amber" since I was 15 so it just kind of stuck.
2- Tell us a bit about yourself. Are you married & do you have any kids?
I've been married to my husband Owen for 5 years. We met on November 23, 2003, he proposed on December 7, 2003, and we were married April 11, 2004. Our first child, Kierra, was born on March 7, 2005 (11 months after our wedding and almost 16 months after we met) and Quinton (Quinn) came along 2 years after that. AND... we're done! The instant family is working out great and we're definitely happy not being outnumbered, with one boy and one girl. The million dollar family right? ;)
3- What did you want to be when you grew up?
#1 on my life list is to be a mom. But since waiting around for a husband isn't exactly a career, I decided to be a teacher. I worked at a couple theraputic horse ranches and fell in love with children with special needs. I went to Niagara College for their Educational Assistant for Special Needs program but when I met Owen, and we got engaged, I got to follow my real dream to be a mom. So we got to work on that and I haven't looked back.
4- How did you get interested in photography?
I have always, always, always loved photography. I think it was always the thing I wanted to do the most, but for some reason felt it was unattainable. It was like saying you want to play hockey for the NHL. For some reason I viewed it that way. I was accepted to college for it and did the EA thing instead. I just didn't think I could do it. My husband bought me a Canon Rebel for Christmas a few years back and I hit the ground running with it. It was what made me a photographer. I've obviously upgraded since. ;)
5- How many years have you been in business?
This is my 2nd summer of weddings, but I've done more boudoir and portraits than I can remember!
6- What gave you the idea to start doing boudoir photography?
One day my cousin suggested we take photos of each other for our husbands (we're pretty tight obviously) and I thought, let's take it one step further and see if OTHER people want me to take pictures of them for their husbands! And a lot of people did! haha I then learned that there is an entire market out there called Boudoir so I jumped right on that boat.
7- Do you find that most women have difficulty being relaxed in front of the camera during your boudoir sessions?
They do for the first 3.9 minutes and then we're having a blast. I have never, ever shot a girl that didn't break through the nerves and end up having a riot. They all leave saying how much fun it was, and how much of a confidence boost it was. I had the Sarnia Observer do a huge feature on me for Valentine's day 2009, and the writer started the article with "Amber Chudy is part boudoir photographer, part self-esteem coach." I liked that he saw that in the shoot he observed for the article.
8- Describe a typical boudoir session.
Typically, I welcome the client, and we start off by going through the contract with her. This helps us break through the tension if she feels nervous because it gives us something to talk about. I almost always start with some relaxing photos of her in whatever outfit she choses to wear, lying on the bed. We go from there based on what she is looking for in the session. We incorporate props, move to interesting sets (against brick walls, on furniture, etc) and most of the time we finish up shooting her in the tub. I always book rooms with soaker tubs for this reason.
9- What kind of gear do you use?
I shoot with a Canon 40D and a 20D. My favourite lens is my 24-70mm/f2.8. I have lots of other goodies, lights etc.
10- What types of women typically get boudoir photography done?
Every type! I've shot girls ranging from size 0 to 26. I've shot brides-to-be, newlyweds, mothers and even a fair share of grandmothers. A woman is always a woman, and the female body will always be beautiful, no matter what age or stage or size it is. It's all about the angles and the light!! ;)
11- How do you help a larger woman feel sexy during their sessions?
Being a larger woman (I'm around a size 20) I know what things about my body really bother me and which parts I love and want to showcase. When I shoot fellow BBW's (Big Beautiful Women!) I ask them what their favourite body parts are and the ones they want to minimize. I shoot from flattering angles and keep the conversation fun and light, and that really helps people loosen up and feel more comfortable. The lost tension is obvious throughout the photos. The first frames are always a little more awkward and tense, and you can always see the client loosen up and have fun and get into the shoot. They get better and better as the session goes on.
12- Are there any photographers that inspire you? If so, why?
John Lyons has always been my favourite. Not only does his work speak for itself, but he has and edge to his shots that are always in their own class. I remember oogling his work when I was getting married (wishing I could afford him! haha) and as I got to know him as a person, he blew me away. He is friendly, hilarious, and just an overal blast to be around. He reels in the clients by his amazing portfolio, and books them because of his fabulous personality. If I can be half what he is I'll be a great photographer. I also love Jessica Claire and Harold Jankowiak. I've never met Jessica Claire but Harold has taught me SO MUCH.
13- What are your favourite NON-photography hobbies do you have?
Horses, as I mentioned. I just trail ride now. I am an avid scrapbooker and I love to read and write. I'm working on a novel (it's been in the works for like 10 years so don't look for it anytime soon!) and I love to spend time outside as much as possible, playing with my kids or going places like Canatara Park here in Sarnia or to the Bluewater Bridge. I just like to be with my family. I like to do anything artsy and creative.
14- If you were a donut, what kind would you be and why?
Great Shot! I want to see more! Enough Suspense!
